FOREWORD
The 1977 edition of the directory of Mental Health Resources in the Greater
Washington Area has been prepared by Public Inquiries Section, National
Clearinghouse for Mental Health Information, Division of Scientific and Public
Information, National Institute of Mental Health. Originally designed for use
within NIMH, the directory is now distributed to groups and individuals outside
the agency who have indicated a need for such a listing.
The Washington area has been divided into four districts: District of Columbia,
Montgomery and Prince Georges Counties, and Virginia. The State Mental
Health Authority and Mental Health Associations are listed for each district.
The resources of each district are then listed in the order of area served, from
those without any restrictions or residence requirements to those limited to the
immediate neighbohood.
Such an arrangement will help locate all of the resources available as quickly as
possible. Thus a call for help for an emotionally disturbed child residing in Prince
Georges County can be referred to the resources listed under Prince Georges
County Children and also to the resources in the other districts that have no
residence restriction or that accept children from the entire metropolitan area.
For ready reference, special sections list emergency, information and referral, after-
care, alcoholism, and miscellaneous services. Information on drug abuse help and
facilities can be obtained from the National Institute on Drug Abuse, 11400
Rockville Pike, Rockville, Maryland 20852; telephone: 301, 443-6500.
